Poetry Slam: Spoken Word Competition

The ICNA Symposium 2021 team invites the Muslim Youth to showcase its talent at the Spoken Word Competition. We’ve organized an event based on the theme of the convention,  “IN GOD WE TRUST”. We wish you the best of luck, and we are excited to experience the talent of Muslim Youth In shaa Allah.

  • THEME:  ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’
  • Saturday, April  03, 2021 at 8:00 pm
  • ALLOTTED TIME: 3 mins max – MUST be relevant to this year’s theme of the convention ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ (if you go over 3 minutes, points will be deducted- please see the rules below)
  • Include your name and a short bio (for us to introduce you to the stage with)
  • This year we do NOT have an age limit- all ages are welcome to submit BEFORE the submission deadline, April 1st, 2021 – (All submissions will be shortlisted purely based on the lyrical content so please make sure to submit your best piece!)
  • IF you did not submit your poem beforehand, there may still be an opportunity for you to perform on the day-of event, (If you’d like to perform on the day (without having previously submitted your poem) then please NOTE you must reach out to us via email mentioned below).
  • JUDGEMENT CATEGORIES
    • PERFORMANCE / DELIVERY / STAGE PRESENCE (30)
    • WRITING STYLE / CREATIVITY / STRUCTURE (30)
    • SUBJECT RELEVANCE (20 POINTS)
    • APPROPRIATE: CONTENT / APPROPRIATE DRESS CODE (20 POINTS)
  • TIME DEDUCTIONS:
    • FIRST 10 SECONDS (4 POINT DEDUCTION)
    • 30 SECONDS (7 POINT DEDUCTION)
    • 45 SECONDS (10 POINT DEDUCTION)
    • 1 MIN (DISQUALIFIED)
  • INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT: 
    • FIRST TIME (5 POINT DEDUCTION)
    • SECOND TIME (10 POINT DEDUCTION)
    • THIRD TIME (DISQUALIFIED)
  • CONTENT SUBMISSION: 
    • YOU MUST SUBMIT POEM before the slam
    • YOUR POEM MUST BE YOUR OWN WRITING, if you had someone else write it for you, or if it comes to our attention that you plagiarized, then you will be disqualified. We expect all poets to demonstrate personal and professional integrity with regards to this.
    • DEADLINE to submit your poem is Thursday 1st April 11:59 pm.
    • Submissions will be judged on the strength of their lyrical content and all poets will be notified on their performance status after Friday 2st April 2021.
    • Please keep in mind that performers must focus only on spoken word; singing and instruments are not permitted in this competition.
